Dining Room Picture Frame Molding

Dining Room Picture Frame Molding

When I shared my post on Choosing the Perfect White Paint, we were preparing to paint our living room, entryway and dining room walls in Simply White by Benjamin Moore.  And guess what–we did it!  And I love it. But I'm not ready to stop here, even though I do like the idea of transitioning to a pared-down, cleaner design.  My next plan is to add molding–specifically picture frame molding–to these spaces.

By the way, when writing this post I kept seeing two different spellings, molding and moulding, and checked to see which one was correct.  Apparently both are, although molding is used primarily in the U.S., while moulding is used pretty much everywhere else.  I'll switch back and forth a bit just to keep everybody happy!

Update Your Walls -- Benjamin Moore Simply White

Consider this my before-moulding picture. As you can see, things are looking a bit different since we went with white!  By the way, the artwork above our couch isn't permanent.  I brought it up from our basement office/craft area because that blank wall was just too much and I needed to make my eyeballs feel better until we get some trim work on the wall.  I do plan to hang the botanical prints which were in this space before, but I think I'll put them in the dining room.

Even before we started painting, I knew I wanted some kind of mill work or trim on the walls, and that hasn't changed. Initially, I thought I'd go with board and batten, which I love.  But I had to be honest with myself, and board and batten just wouldn't work with the style of our home.  So I went in search of inspiration on Pinterest …

… and fell in love with picture frame molding.  Of course, I've seen it a thousand times before–mostly in older, traditional settings.

But once I saw this bright and beautiful space, from Suburban Bees, it sealed the deal.  I knew this was the look I wanted for our home.  Clean, modern, and elegant.

This is another view of the same space.  Isn't this gorgeous?  I love that light fixture!  The beautiful mouldings are from Metrie.

I was also inspired by Sonja, of JS Home Design (via Instagram), who has picture frame molding installed throughout her beautiful Vancouver BC home.

By the way, both Suburban Bees and JS Home Design also used Benjamin Moore Simply White in their spaces.  I have to tell you, I love this white.  It doesn't come off as too cold or too yellow.  It changes very little during the day as sunlight moves through the room.  It's just a true, bright, clean white–which is exactly what we wanted!

More beautiful picture frame molding inspiration via Caitlin Wilson.  I like how she left out the chair rail and achieved a slightly more modern look without losing the elegant effect.  And how about those pillows?!!

I love how Becki Owens mixed traditional and contemporary elements in this space. This is also a great example of how you can use a horizontal rectangular shape for the mouldings, rather than just vertical.

Adding picture frame molding to your home

This beautiful dining room belongs to the always-inspiring Julie Blanner.  She also omitted the chair rail, which makes me wonder if it's even necessary to add it!

This light-filled space is by designer Christine Dovey.  Not only are the mouldings beautiful, but that settee is amazing!

And, finally, I leave you with a cute pup and more gorgeousness from the home of Sonja of JS Home Design (via Home Bunch).

So, friends, this is what I have in mind. I'm a little nervous, but excited, too.  Which is exactly how I felt before we painted.  And I'm so happy I took the plunge.  I need to keep reminding myself that change is good!

How about you? Have you installed molding (or moulding) in your home?  If so, I'd love to hear from you.  Any advice would be appreciated!
